Sick Visits Q&A
What are sick visits?
Sick visits are consultations with a member of the Texas Primary & Pediatric Care team that you have when you or your child is unwell or needs urgent care.
Many visits to your primary care provider are routine, such as annual physicals, immunizations, travel medicine appointments, and chronic disease management. A sick visit is ideal if you're ill or injured and need prompt attention, but aren't so bad you have to go to the emergency room at the hospital.
What kinds of health problems might require a sick visit?
Many minor illnesses and injuries don't require medical attention – a cold, for example, should clear up within a week, providing you're generally healthy and get plenty of rest. Over-the-counter medications can help ease the symptoms of colds and other common problems like headaches.
Sometimes though, infections can set in, or what you thought at first was a cold turns out to be flu. If symptoms are getting worse instead of better, a sick visit would be in order. A symptom like a cough or headache that persists after the cold has run its course also needs investigating, as you could have a chest infection or sinusitis.
Other symptoms that might need investigating if they're severe or don't clear up in a few days include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Fever
- Skin rash or hives
- Stomach pain
- Sore throat
Injuries like sprains and minor lacerations or burns might also need prompt medical attention. If you or your child's condition is urgent, Texas Primary & Pediatric Care offers same-day sick visits.
What does a sick visit involve?
Diagnosis is the first step when you have a sick visit at Texas Primary & Pediatric Care. Your provider looks at your medical history and discusses your current symptoms. They then carry out a physical exam and check your blood pressure, heart and respiration (breathing) rates, pulse, and temperature.
You might need to undergo labs and diagnostics tests too, for example, blood and urine tests, a throat or nasal swab, or an X-ray, ECG (electrocardiogram), or spirometry test. Accurately diagnosing your condition ensures you receive the most appropriate treatment.
As well as in-person sick visits, the Texas Primary & Pediatric Care team also offers telemedicine consultations for adults and children. Their telemedicine systems are secure and meet all the current regulations for safety and privacy, giving you a chance to discuss your health problem with your doctor without needing to come into the practice.
